Get Paid to Learn! We offer a stipend for Online Training and preparation for one of two designations depending on your experience. Our career support offerings are designed to help workforce trainees to take the next step towards developing skills and knowledge in residential green construction. Participants will learn building fundamentals and design best practices to help make homes more sustainable and energy efficient.

Option 1: Building Science Principles

The Building Science Principles scholarship provides foundational building knowledge that will help Earth Advantage workforce trainees understand the science behind building sustainably. This training involves 16 hours of videos with follow-up reading and light quizzes meant for entry-level audiences. Trainees who finish this course then take the BSP exam and earn the stipend after submitting their test scores. 

Option 2: Sustainable Homes Professional
The Sustainable Homes Professional (SHP) Scholarship provides advanced residential green building knowledge for Earth Advantage workforce trainees who have at least 2 years prior experience in the construction industry. This training involves 18 hours of videos and homework and will take between 25-30 hours to complete. Trainees earn the stipend by finishing the online training, but are encouraged to complete a final project and earn the SHP progressional designation.

No Cost Education: Online training consists of 15-20 hours of knowledge building in residential energy efficent construction. These courses are on-demand and self-paced, so you can complete it in your own time.

Industry Recognized Credentials: Completing the Building Science Principles designation OR the Sustainable Homes Professional designation will earn you an industry-recognized credential indicating your advanced knowledge of sustainable construction.

$500 Stipend! Earn $500 after completing the Sustainable Homes Professional course or upon completing the Building Science Principles exam. Note that processing time takes up to two weeks to receive payment. 

Commitment to finishing: You must make a commitment to complete the program within 3 months.

Communication throughout the course: You must respond to regular email check-ins from Earth Advantage staff and provide a status updates. This check-in will happen in addition to the once-a-month study meetings, and is meant to help recipients stay on track with completing the course. 

Computer access: Since the courses are available online and on-demand, you will need access to a computer and the internet to complete the self-directed course. 

Applicants must be current or past graduates from an Earth Advantage workforce partner training program to qualify for this scholarship opportunity. Some current partners include:
  Earth Advantage highly encourages Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC), women, transgender and gender diverse individuals, rural community members (population ≤20,000), and others who have been historically under-represented or marginalized in the building industry to apply.

Trainees who have completed either course are eligible for connection to industry professionals for additional conversations and career exploration. If you have completed the online training, let us know if you are interested in either of the below services!

Mentoring sessions are a way to explore a chosen career pathway. This can be a one hour introductory conversation or several hours of career navigation and mentorship.

Job shadows may involve in-field site visits to resiential construction projects with Earth Advantage or EnerCity Collaborative staff, builders/contractor partners, home energy score assessors, and other professionals. Arranged upon request and when possible.

Earth Advantage will do our best to facilitate these connections, but services are limited and offered based on contractor availability. 

Once we receive your application:

  • Earth Advantage will contact you within two weeks to schedule an interview.
     
  • During the interview, we will want to know more about:
    • Your goals and interest in sustainable construction careers.
    • Your ability to commit to and follow through on the online course.
    • Make an agreement on the timeline to complete one of the above trainings.
If your application is approved:
  • Begin the course within 30 days of the approval date.
  • You agree to response to bi-weekly email check-ins from Earth Advantage.
  • Make sure you complete the online training within 3 months.
  • Complete a W-9 form so we can issue the stipend payment. We will help you fill this out during the introductory ZOOM call.
  • Full payment will be made after completing the BSP exam or SHP course (please allow two weeks for processing).
