Build your foundation in residential building science and prepare for the BPI Building Science Principles (BSP) exam.

This training is a part of Prosper Portland’s Green Construction Contractor Development Program, which provides training and support to residential construction business owners looking to enter or grow their services in green construction.

This BSP training is the first step in the BPI pathway and is especially useful for contractors interested in continuing into Building Analyst Technician (BA-T) and/or Building Analyst Professional (BA-P) trainings.

Important Pathway Note: Completion of this training and passing the BPI Building Science Principles exam are required before participants can be considered for next-step BA-T and/or BA-P training through this program. Registering for BSP confirms your registration for this training only. It does not automatically confirm eligibility or enrollment for future BA-T or BA-P trainings. Those opportunities are reviewed separately based on participant interest, cohort capacity, exam completion/passing status, and Navigation follow-up.

Overview

Length: 2 Days

The Building Science Principles (BSP) course provides a practical foundation in residential building science and the house-as-a-system approach. Participants will explore how the building envelope, mechanical systems, occupants, and outdoor environment interact, with particular attention to the movement of heat, air, and moisture and the effects those interactions can have on comfort, health, durability, and energy use.

This two-day course combines presentations, activities, residential scenarios, and review questions to reinforce key building science concepts and support preparation for the BPI Building Science Principles exam. It is designed for contractors, tradespeople, emerging home performance professionals, and workforce-program participants who want to better understand how their work affects the whole house and are working towards BPI certification. The course emphasizes practical decision-making, recognizing potential risks, and avoiding unintended consequences when making changes to a home.

This training is designed for residential contractor businesses and key staff who want to better understand home energy upgrades, home retrofit work, and BPI training pathways.
