Boral’s Innovation Factory Brings High-Performance Materials

February 5, 2017 | By: Owen Elkins

Boral®, a world-leading manufacturer and supplier of sustainable building products and construction materials, recently opened its state-of-the-art Research and Development facility in San Antonio, Texas. The new 27,000-sq.-ft. facility supports Boral’s ongoing commitment to bring transformational solutions to market at an accelerated pace.

Boral’s Innovation Factory analyzes market trends and future building requirements, then identifies emerging technologies and develops solutions that fill service gaps. The facility incorporates office space and analytical areas to incubate projects designed to enhance growing businesses and long-term results, and to deliver innovative customer solutions. In a series of analytical areas equipped with the latest in material testing equipment, material scientists study everything from coatings to climate, all with the goal of disruptive innovation around durable, manmade light building products.
The new facility is a physical culmination of Boral’s Innovation Factory R&D offshoot, developed in 2012 to identify emerging technologies and develop solutions that anticipate and fulfill customers’ needs. Through the Innovation Factory, Boral increased its U.S. patents by more than 30% to more than 100 in total.

The first breakthrough of Boral’s Innovation Factory is a revolutionary product available right now—Boral TruExterior® Siding and Trim. This entirely new product category uses patented poly-ash technology to create an exterior material that is resistant to moisture and maintains a high level of dimensional stability. And that means installers need only cut, fasten, and paint—no edge sealing, no ground contact concerns, no color restrictions, or any of the other hassles associated with other siding and trim products.

Boral TruExterior® Siding & Trim is comprised of over 70% recycled material through the use of recovered coal combustion byproducts (fly ash), which is endorsed by the U.S. Green Building Council for use in construction materials.  The products are Cradle-to-Cradle Certified™ and are made in the USA.

Use of products such as Boral TruExterior Siding & Trim earn Earth Advantage Material points under measures 3.7.1- Fiber Cement Siding and 3.7.2- Durable Exterior Trim, and each product is also awarded an additional Material point under measure 3.12.4- Cradle to Cradle Certification.
