Join our Sustainable Building Essentials training program and learn cutting edge design and building best practices from our expert instructor, Bruce Sullivan of BASE zero, as he guides participants through the spectrum of high performance building and shares practical insights on the following:

  • Building science fundamentals & moisture management
  • High performance wall & roof assemblies 
  • HVAC product selection & integrated system design
  • Water conservation techniques
  • Indoor air quality, material considerations & health impacts
  • Local third party/utility building programs & incentives
  • Zero energy & zero energy ready homes 
This 6-day Sustainable Building Essentials training is an abbreviated version of the 12-day Sustainable Homes Professional program that Earth Advantage (EA) has offered over 20 times across Oregon since 2008, and will now provide the most essential information in a customized format for busy building professionals. â€‹

EA has partnered with EEBA to integrate their new Zero Energy Homes training into the Sustainable Building Essentials program, which will provide participants with the opportunity to earn a nationally-recognized zero energy professional designation at the end of the training. Earth Advantage and EEBA will provide logos and marketing support to help designated professionals gain visibility as elite zero energy building professionals. 

Sustainable Building Essentials offers an in-depth, field-tested training program for residential and multifamily building industry professionals who are looking to take their projects to the next level of quality and performance. Participants will gain valuable information and eliminate common barriers to high performance building via: 
  • Lecture, discussion, hands-on exercises, and short quizzes
  • Guest speakers that share past projects, experiences, & expertise on issues that are critical to achieving high performance
  • Three tours of under-construction or recently-completed green certified homes with builders & raters on-site to explain approaches, reveal cost/benefit analysis, & answer questions

Bruce Sullivan
Bruce Sullivan: Bruce operates Base Zero LLC to promote greater sustainability in residential construction through training, consulting and contractor services. He has been involved in energy efficient construction since 1983 and has been a primary training developer/instructor for Earth Advantage, Energy Trust of Oregon, BetterBuiltNW and EEBA. Bruce first taught the SHP program in 2008, and has since delivered it over a dozen times across Oregon. In 2006, Bruce built his personal home that earned the NAHB EnergyValue Housing and Green Building Awards. In 2015, Bruce completed construction on a new zero energy home.
