EARTH ADVANTAGE SECURES SEATTLE CONTRACT TO SUPPLY HOME ENERGY PERFORMANCE RATINGS FOR 5000 HOMES

October 02, 2009

EPS Gains Momentum
as “Miles per Gallon” Rating for Homes

PORTLAND, Ore., October 5, 2009 – Earth Advantage Institute, a nonprofit green building resource and think tank that has certified more than 11,000 homes, today announced it has won a contract to supply the City of Seattle with home energy performance rating software and auditor training for energy audits of 5,000 city homes.

The selection accelerates market acceptance of EPS (Energy Performance Score), a miles-per-gallon style rating system that was developed by an Energy Trust of Oregon sponsored team and led by Earth Advantage. The EPS indicates a home’s energy efficiency level and its energy associated carbon emissions. The EPS has gained momentum after a detailed 2008 pilot study showed high accuracy levels, and after EPS scores for new and existing homes were recently incorporated into Oregon legislation.

“Earth Advantage Institute is committed to achieving an immediate, feasible path to sustainability in the built environment,” said Sean Penrith, the executive director for Earth Advantage Institute. “The selection of the organization as a provider for the City of Seattle validates EPS as a highly useful tool for home comparison and for measuring the results of energy improvements.”

Under the terms of the contract, Earth Advantage Institute will provide the City of Seattle with home EPS software for use by energy auditors in the delivery of home energy audits and ratings. The home energy performance rating software will be integrated into Seattle City Light, Office of Housing and Home Performance with ENERGY STAR® auditing protocols. Earth Advantage Institute will also deliver a training curriculum and train various groups that include Realtors and appraisers to use and understand the EPS. The organization will develop a Web portal to communicate audit results to customers.
